FIELD created the music video and album artwork for Stateless‘ 2010 album Matilda and the single release Ariel on Ninja Tune.
The music video for Ariel is a digital dance performance exploring the eternal struggle of good and evil.
FIELD animated the two opponent characters of the song as surreal human figures, drawing dynamic sculptures into space.
“I’ve never worked with any artists before
that have so fully made my lyrics come to life”
Chris James, Stateless lead singer
“A superb mixture of digital and analog”
“The appreciation of body form of formal dance is making a comeback. We’ve most recently seen Crunk turn in its baggy pants for black tutu’s in Kanye West’s Runaway. And Stateless’s clip of the new single ‘Ariel’ (…) is a visually stunning display of such lyrical prowess.
Mulberry Merman’s Marvelous Mixtape
“Bravo, the gang at FIELD, who directed this hybrid of raw movement and visual effect.”
Matilda Album Artwork
Cover illustrations for Stateless‘ 2011 album “Matilda” on Ninja Tune, for print and online use.
Inspired by the mystic characters crowding the songs of the album, we experimented with a minimal representation of the human body, lit only by the reflections of flighty cloth extending the body movements.
The Making-of
Collaborating with professional dancer Dominic North, FIELD recorded an impromptu interpretation of the song using 3D motion capture technology.
