Edition Unseld

July 10, 2009 in Design
German publishing house Suhrkamp has started a new series of non-fictional essay books called Edition Unseld to foster a new dialogue between natural sciences and humanities.

While the interdepency of natural and cultural sciences and humanities was self-evident for polymaths like Goethe, Humboldt or Helmholtz, the prominent achievements of natural sciences in the 20th century brought along a dissociation of the disciplines. In a time when the age-old knowledge that truth is the consensus with nature is being questioned, natural sciences have to focus their research beyond its current borders, and meet with humanities to find new ways to explain our world.

The critical essays, interviews and dialogues take up pitch points of various disciplines, from physics, mathematics and neuro science, to philosophy, sociology, media and technology studies; focusing a broad audience. (frankly translated from www.edition-unseld.de)
I started reading Sandra Mitchell´s essay on Complexity and find it highly recommendable!

The books come in great sleeve designs that surely base on some generative conceptual ideas. The typography and monochrome backgrounds nicely connect with the traditional design of Edition Suhrkamp, while the white streaks, spreading out from the same origin, diverted by forces and vortices, illustrate the idea of a non-singular view on the world and its phenomenons.

The imprint credits Nina Vöge and Alexander Stublic for the graphic design, but unfortunately nothing about the concept seems to be online. If anyone comes across more info on this, please let us know so we can extend this post.
